Funded journal titles by the EC FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot

The policy guidelines for this new post-grant funding initiative state that “The FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot provides an additional instrument to improve access to research results from FP7 projects, but does not affect authors’ choice on how their project publications are made Open Access“. Some questions have arrived via the Pilot helpdesk asking whether this actually means that hybrid journals are supported by this funding initiative, which is of course not the case, as specifically mentioned in the guidelines. This sentence actually means the Green Open Access route always remains an alternative, i.e. depositing in cost-free Open Access repositories.

This said, questions have also been received from a number of institutions and OpenAIRE NOADs on whether the Pilot could please make available a list of eligible journals which they can point researchers at who want to have this Gold Open Access funding opportunity in mind when choosing where to submit their manuscripts. At a time when 115 funding requests have already been granted from this FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot, the sample of funded journal titles collected by the initiative has become significant enough to release the list, which is the aim of this post.

A list of journals for which more than one funding request has been approved so far was shown (slide 10) at the Pilot presentation delivered at the OpenAIRE workshop in Ghent a week ago (Nov 18th). The list is rather short, especially keeping in mind that the full list of funded journal titles presently includes 64 journals. This means there’s a very long tail of journals with just one approved funding request covering many disciplines. The list of journals funded so far is shown below alphabetically sorted by journal title.

Two journals are clearly topping the list at the moment, and it’s no surprise that they’re both multidisciplinary titles. PLoS ONE and Scientific Reports also have reasonable APC fees which make their funding requests rather easy to process, as opposite to for instance Nature Communications (currently the third most popular journal title), whose APC fee is above the €2,000 funding cap, thus forcing a more complex invoicing workflow to be followed.

This list of funded journal titles will be kept up-to-date as the FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot takes up, hopefully contributing to provide an insight on the wide range of options available for researchers to submit their manuscripts to with the guarantee that the FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot will be able to fund their APC fees.
